Get Healthy

Ok friends, some of you know I spent 17+ years in the fitness industry so I'm going off the design topic today.  This article is from LSF Fitness, so I do not claim any of it as my own.  BUT what she has to say about fat and healthy living is true.  I have seen many of you in blog-land talking about losing weight and gaining control of your health, I hope this encourages you.

150lbs
I found this picture on Facebook the other day and reposted  hoping to inspire the ladies to quit worrying about the number on the scale and just get healthy.  I do believe this!  HOWEVER, I too can fall victim to the scale when trying to track my progress even though I preach to my clients every day to stay off that thing!   When I’m not training for a competition I typically will only weigh myself once every other week or so.  In fact, I’ve gone a whole month without weighing and even considered getting rid of the thing all together.  I even had a panic moment just this week with my online coach telling her that I’m still at the same weight and getting a little frustrated with only 8 weeks to get to stage weight (which is a ridiculously low and unsustainable place). The reason I hate the scale is very simple. It’s a Debbie Downer!
If you lift weights (and all of us should), you know that you building muscle.  NO…muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat.  I hate that saying because a pound is a pound.  It doesn’t matter what it is.  I like to explain it like this.  Look at a brick.  It’s small but very dense.  Then look at a bag of cotton balls.  It’s big and fluffy but weighs nothing.  How many bags of cotton balls would you need to pile up on that scale to equal the weight of that brick?  Get what I’m saying.? Obviously the brick is muscle and the cotton balls are fat.  The muscle you are building is tighter, denser, and just plain hotter than the same or less weight in fluff.   So if you are strength training and the scale is moving in the wrong direction (at first) don’t fret.  You eventually will start to see the scale move downward because building that muscle will increase your metabolism but will also burn calories if you are doing it with enough intensity. You must be patient and you must change your thinking.  Skinny and soft is not good.  Tight and healthy is what we should be striving for.
My sister, Jamie  is training for a competition with me right now and has put on 10 lbs. of muscle.  You think that’s not hard for a woman to see the scale go up 10 lbs?  It is but she looks fabulous and healthy and strong.  When you see her you automatically think. “Damn, she takes care of herself.”   Both my daughters are athletes and they are strong.  The scale is even their enemy at their young ages of 16 an 14.. When comparing numbers with their friends (I hate this by the way), they always complain that they are heavy.  By looking at them you can see that they are fit and take care of their health.  Everyone’s body is different.  You absolutely cannot compare two people (even the same height) by the scale alone. Do you walk around with a number plastered to your forehead to brag about? NO…so who cares what the scale says.
There are some good reasons to own a scale.   Using it as a guide for how much extra water weight you may carry during your menstrual cycle, controlling weight gain after you’ve reached your goal, and monitoring fluctuations based on dietary or exercise changes.   The scale would be a way to keep yourself in check, but when you are trying to lose weight and beginning a new lifestyle, that sucker will only cause you grief.  Put it away for a month!  Instead take your measurements or try on clothes that you are trying to get into.  Unchain yourself from the number and just do the work, eat the next meal, and push forward.  Your reward is just on the other side of your wit’s end!

Project Monday

I bought this dresser and hutch a few years ago for my office from Christine's Creations in Woodstock, GA.  Christine's store is one of my favorite places to go to find fun things for the home.

My office is in dire need of an update so I decided I would pull out my paint brush and try a different colored chalk paint on this dresser and hutch. I use the dresser to keep paint fan decks, fabric samples and office supplies and the hutch has served me well for design books and catalogs from vendors.
I chose Coco which is sort of a gray/brown. After removing the hardware, I sanded down the rough spots.

I painted the whole piece and thought I would use dark wax to finish. Oh my, didn't like it at all- too blotchy - so in keeping with my tradition of painting, not being satisfied and starting over, here I was again.
After painting with the coco as a base cover, I had in mind to try to make the finish appear like old wood.  I painted random streaks of raw umber craft paint and robin egg blue chalk paint.
You can see here how I worked the two together with a paint brush. This is one of those projects too where once I got into the compartments in the hutch I wondered what the heck I had gotten myself into.
Sometimes a little dab of water was needed to get the paint to move.
I am pleased how I was able to accomplish a bit of a grainy wood look.
This time I used clear wax!  Obviously it doesn't show where it may not go on perfectly. "Mo bettah"!

All finished except for the hardware.  I'll keep you posted on what I decide as well as how the room shapes up.

Foodie Friday

Mushroom Risotto

Can you believe it's Friday already?
I've been up to my ears in paint, working on a chest for my office, more on that to come later.  I find that when I get focused on something that's all I can do, so posting isn't top priority.

I LOVE risotto.
Have you ever made it?  It really is simple - a bit time intensive - but while sipping a glass of wine while stirring, it is ready in no time.  It can be a stand alone meal or along side your favorite protein!  Enjoy!

How are your flowers blooming?
We're not there yet but cannot wait!

Foodie Friday

Egg and Avocado Spread
This looks delish and avocados are so good for us, you know the 'good' fat!
Go here for the recipe, but it's in another language (I'm thinking Polish) so have fun deciphering it!  Honestly, it looks like chopped eggs, avocado, salt, pepper, mayo, olive oil and lemon juice.

Spring is coming, (really it is), I just know it's around the corner.  :)
I have seen them in Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and they really are nice to walk in the door and see. Go get yourself some!
